Karen began dancing at the age of four and has trained extensively in ballet, jazz, and ballroom. In addition to dance, she has studied the martial art Kobujitsu for five years, and was first exposed to bellydance though Egyptian style classes in Ottawa, ON. Karen began studying with The Neighbourhood Strays in 2007, and joined the troupe in 2009, continuing with them until 2010 when she founded Seraka. Karen has been performing regularly with Seraka since returning from her role as Belly Dance Foreign Correspondent (i.e. working abroad as an engineer) in 2011. Karen achieved her Basic Black Certification from the Dark Side Studio in June 2013.

Karen finds inspiration from dancers such as Rachel Brice, Samantha Emmanuel, and Mira Betz, and is currently developing her skills in layered movements, emotive dancing, and precision movements. In addition to her red curls and Pi tattoo, she’s known for her sharp isolations, quick footwork, and endless arm and leg extensions, creating flawless lines and shapes; a true composition of art.

Where do you find your creativity for making dances?

My creative mind is illusive, it generally takes a bit of pressure to start something – though I’m always in a a creative mood for choreography when I have a non-dance related deadline I’m procrastinating.

Your thoughts on costuming. Go!

I am constantly working on something new – my head swims with all the things I would make if only I had the time. I am the resident Seraka seamstress. If there’s something we need to be cohesive I’m generally the one in charge of making it.  I don’t know how may ruffles I’ve made in the past 3 years for dance projects!

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Timely. Crafty (not devious!). Methodical.

What’s a fun tidbit we might not know about you?

In my months between graduating university and starting my career, I went backpacking in Europe for 3 months.

What’s your favourite food?

Pizza – I love it in all forms (my biggest disappointment was moving back home to find Pizza Experts had closed).
