The lovely Audra Simmons is coming to St. John’s June 12-14, 2015 to teach and share her world of dance Excitement!
All workshops are taking place at The Dance Centre (Coaker’s Meadow Plaza, 286 Torbay Rd, St. John’s NL). Pricing and registration is available on Audra’s website.
If you’re unfamiliar with Audra, have a peek at this video.
Work on your foundation with stationary and moving drills using the basic foundational elements of belly dance. Develop your hip, chest, abdominal, arm, hand and feet movements and pathways as we examine, refine and revisit basic shapes and patterns.
Then we’ll bump up a notch and start to complicate the foundation, with variations and layers, and optional finger cymbal patterns, and traveling. And possibly to push you gently over the edge, we’ll put some of the pieces together into drilling combinations, again starting slow and simple and seeing how much we can add before it falls apart.
Prepare to work hard, sweat, and laugh as you build your dance foundation.
Please bring water and finger cymbals.
Develop the expression, emotion and fluidity, with three hours of pure movement bliss as we study two sections of original choreography by Audra. We’ll transfer the focus away from the technical, and work with creating shape & line, breath and weight as we develop these dances.
Learn the details behind the movements, and the use of unusual shapes and awkward positions to portray and convey emotion through dance.
Prepare to work hard, think outside the usual belly dance box, and to let go and DANCE!
We’ll be reviewing the Basic Black material, drilling in stationary and traveling ways, doing a finger cymbal review and spending some time on the material we skimmed over during the intensive (dance drilling, combinations, and dance notation).
I’ll also have some ideas about preparing for the Lavender Intensive (scheduled for Tuesday September 15 through Sunday September 20, 2015 at the Arts and Culture Center, daily from 10 am to 6 pm) so that you can be as ready for it as possible!
